On Thursday, I was all excited. There were only 2 days to go until we passed the timeline of when we lost our Emme. Things were going so smoothly.
Until the afternoon…
I have been feeling a bit bunged up this week. I know I need to get on top of it before it gets bad, but I wasn’t on my game. I went to the bathroom. It was a typical constipated poop. And I strained a bit to get it out.
Then, I wiped.
Pink.
Red.
Reddish-brown.
OH GOD! Please no!
The spotting tapered off over the hour to only brown, but the brown latest up until yesterday morning.
Mr. Google declared spotting after a bowel movement to be a fairly common occurrence. If you have a sensitive cervix, the extra pressure could have caused the bleeding.
My fertility clinic said to just take it easy until our upcoming scan on Wednesday, but I knew I couldn’t go through the weekend wondering if my baby was ok or not. My fear was getting the best of me.
I called my OB and got in late yesterday afternoon. He did a scan on his super crappy portable ultrasound machine. He was having a hard time getting a clear picture because my bladder was too full. Unfortunately from my angle, I could NOT see a thing. He said that the baby was significantly larger than the last scan and that there was a flicker of a heartbeat. We didn’t get to hear it though. My husband was able to see it all. When I sat up, the image he had left on the screen was barely anything to be satisfied with. The OB reassured me that everything should be fine. He also sent me for blood work to check my hormone levels.
When I left, I was still a bit panicked. I’m a facts and figures kind of person. I wanted to know the exact size the baby had grown and how many beats per minute. My husband was super excited though. He said the baby was bigger and he most definitely saw the heartbeat. Seeing his excitement calmed me down.
My friend who also had this OB said he’s a man of less words when everything is fine. If something is wrong, he is very thorough. I guess that is also reassuring. I wish his office had better technology, but I am happy with his personality and his level of availability. I know a few other OBs in my city that you would rarely be able to get a same day appointment with. This OB is always willing to ensure you feel comfortable. Plus, he knows my history from doing my ectopic surgery. His on-call rotation include a few other top OBs in our city. I know I will be in good hands no matter what.
As of last night, all spotting was gone. I’m back on the disgusting fibre drink my Naturopathic Doctor gave me and I’ve upped my water intake.
Today I am 7 weeks, 2 days. This is officially the most pregnant I’ve ever been – a milestone I was looking forward to reaching. 🙂
Our next – official – ultrasound is this Wednesday, March 4. I’m so looking forward to a good view of my babe and hearing that whoosh whoosh for the first time.
Glad to hear you’ve made it this far. Be sure to treat yourself this weekend…you deserve it! : )

*BIG HUGS* Lindsey, I am praying for you. It sounds like the spotting could definitely be due to the bowel movement you had. That’s so awesome that you were able to get in for a same day appointment with your OB. Feed off your hubby’s excitement until your next scan. He had a better view and overall, it sounds like the doctor isn’t concerned. Hang in there lady and congrats on being beautifully pregnant for 7 weeks and 2 days!
PS: I think Zahra wants to set us up 😉 Yesterday she asked me if I would be interested in connecting with you. She said she thinks we could be really good friends! lol

I feel your pain, been constipated the entire pregnancy & resorted to *desperate measures*. I hope the fiber does the trick for you! ❤

I may need to reach out for advice if desperate measures are required. I swear I drank like 3 litres of water yesterday and it also helped. But I peed every 20 minutes.

I have to take calcium for the blood thinners and steroids both of which deplete our bodies of calcium and its absorption. I take magnesium with it to avoid constipation. The unflavoured CALM brand. Works like a charm – just don’t take too much or you can end up with the opposite problem. I recommend that if things get slow moving again. It can help with sleep if taken at night too.

I’m so glad you were able to get in for a scan and that everything looks ok. I know how scary spotting is. It sucks. Congratulations on this milestone!

This is so wonderful! I know you’re super concerned about the bleeding, but I’m glad it’s stopped, and I’m so happy that your OB saw a heartbeat! That is life right there. I know it’s too early for me to see anything this week, but the heartbeat is my biggest hurdle mentally.

We never got to hear it with the ectopic. This is a huge step for us! It’s also so reassuring that your risks drop drastically after heartbeat.

I’m so thankful your baby is great. I know all too well the panicking that comes with bleeding while pregnant, and how a sensitive cervix can cause it…now mine was an extreme case, but even with the crazy cervix, it was a successful pregnancy. My mfm told me he would prefer me to take some milk of magnesia and let things slide out of you instead of having bear down. Stick with high high fiber and lots of water hopefully are enough Keep growing your sweet baby!

The week I started to let my guard down, at 12 weeks, was when I had spotting. Queue panic. So glad your ob was able to get you right in, hopefully you’ll start to feel a little better with the ultrasound to hear that sweet woosh woosh!

I had the same thing at 5, 6 and 7ish weeks and went on to have a (relatively) healthy pregnancy! Try to stay off your feet if you can, and lay on your left side (which really, who knows if that helps this early, but it can’t hurt!)

Yes I’ve been trying to sleep and lay in the left! Thanks for the reminder. You know how it goes… Do whatever we think will help!

I hope that is the only bleeding you have! I had a tiny bit of spotting with both pregnancies and nothing else.
I have heard that magnesium helps with constipation, but I take it because of leg cramps (always) and I’ve not had leg cramps, nor bad constipation.
Only a few more sleeps!

Spotting is terrifying. Glad you could get into the doctor’s office and check things out. It had spotting after two different trans vag u/s. Scared the crap out of me.

Thinking about you hon. I know it’s impossible to not worry so I’m not going to tell you not to, but spotting in the first tri is very common. My SIL had heavy bleeding throughout the first tri and she now has a healthy almost one year old. As for your scan, why on earth didn’t your dr turn the screen so you could see?! Hopefully they’ll give you a good view on Wednesday. Continuing to send you prayers. ❤️
